An organisation is born
by Paul Miller
The mighty mySociety achieved another first today when a PledgeBank pledge reached its target and created a new campaigning organisation based on small donations from lots of individuals.
Danny O'Brien's pledge was: "I will create a standing order of 5 pounds per month to support an organisation that will campaign for digital rights in the UK but only if 1,000 other people will too."
If my arithmetic is right that's '60,000 per year and the pledge isn't closed yet. So what does this mean for the future of campaigning in the UK? There's a lot of uncertainty about the future of Make Poverty History at the moment (caricaturing the debate: the big aid agencies want to close it down, the grass-roots campaigners want to keep it going) - could this be an option for people who want to avoid dependency on big funders?
