Shooting at Proteus

Was struck by this shattering article about India. It attempts to provide a snapshot of the creeping intensification of the gender (and class) segregation there, and of a violent combination of liberation and oppression (touching on demographic change and the growth of the internet). I wonder what a war on terror would look like in this context?

It appears that frightening parallels can be found in Mexican culture and, in particular, in the city of Juarez which is just miles from the border with The Home of the Free and the Land of the Brave.
There is a new word in Juarez: 'Feminocidio' - feminocide, the mass slaughter of women. There is no other word to describe what is happening. Some 340 young women have been found murdered since 1992 and a further 180 or so missing.
This article unearths a culture rife with misogyny and violence, in which the police, authorites and even US companies are implicated, if not entirely complicit. It makes absolutely chilling reading and illustrates that in many countries, the independence and financial freedom that work can offer women is still a double-edged sword.
