The issue of discrimination and representativeness in the police has long been an important one. As we approach the ten-year anniversary of The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry, Demos and the National Association of Muslim Police have written a report, "Diversity in Modern Policing" which sets out the position of BME and Muslim officers in the police force.

Between April and July 2008 we surveyed all the constabularies in the UK and half responded. Based on these returns, we estimate that around 5% of officers are from BME background. Muslims officers make up less than 1% of the total. Our figures also suggest that the police are potentially not making use of some of its best human resources, in particular in countering terrorism, as well as other forms of community police work and engagement.

In this short report, we present the key findings, and draw some tentative conclusions and ways forward. The report is free to download by clicking here.
