A week ago we hosted the first podcast for Resilient Nation. Head of Demos' Security programme Charlie Edwards talked to Jacqui Campbell, Director of Communities, Customers & Housing, Dacorum Borough Council; Mary Dhonau, Chief Executive of the National Flood Forum; Martin Fenlon, Assistant Director, Emergency Planning College; Kathy Settle, Deputy Director, Local Response Capability, Cabinet Office and Moya Wood-Heath, Emergency Planning and Civil Protection Adviser, Red Cross.

We explored the role of volunteers and volunteering in helping to build community resilience. While voluntary organisations play a crucial role in supporting the emergency services in times of crisis they also play an important role in each of the four phases of the social resilience cycle (Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery).

During the podcast we discussed the myriad of roles the voluntary sector have as well as how they plug into the community and into formal UK Resilience processes and structures. But there is another distinct category of volunteer which we discussed - someone who isn’t necessarily a member of an organisation but feels compelled to act for the community. The podcast shines a light on these community champions and examines the importance of their role in building community resilience.
