- Where:
- Association of British Insurers, 7th Floor Conference Suite, 51 Gresham Street, London, EC2V 7HQ
In the New Year, Demos will publish an independent pamphlet entitled City Limits: the progressive case for financial service reform. We will also submit it to the UK Banking Commission as evidence. The purpose of the seminar was to thrash out some of the key issues facing policy-makers on this subject.
Specifically, we addressed the questions:
- Rebalance or rescue: what role does financial services play in the wider UK economy?
- Is a big bank a bad bank? Is the debate on breaking up the banks all about punishment, or is it in the national interest?
- Let them go: Do we want a globally competitive financial services sector? Does it matter where banks have their headquarters?
The seminar brought together key practitioners, policy makers and opinion formers and seek to examine some of the key questions at the core of the debate on banking reform. This was be a high-level and invitation-only event taking place under Chatham House rules. We are grateful to the ABI and the Corporation of London for their support for this event.
The meeting will be chaired by Stuart Fraser, Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee of the City of London.
