A seminar series on participation and integration

Date and time:
Wednesday, 21st November 2007 at 10:00am
Location:
Demos, 3rd Floor Magdalen House, 136 Tooley Street, London SE1 2TU

A landmark series of seminars from Demos and the Embassy of the Netherlands in London.

The debate about appropriate levels and means of integration of minorities is set to continue in both The Netherlands and the UK in years to come.

Both countries are known for their tolerance and their economic and social liberalism. Both face similar questions on the limits of tolerance in liberal and largely secular societies.

Three panels of distinguished speakers will compare two stories of multiculturalism, and ask how different forms of participation will shape the future of integration in both countries.

Seminar 1: An equal portion?

The first seminar will examine the relationship between economic participation and integration.

We are delighted to be joined by an expert panel:

Ahmed Aboutaleb
– State Secretary of Social Affairs and Employment, The Netherlands
Polly Toynbee – The Guardian
Paul Scheffer – Professor and essayist, University of Amsterdam
Catherine Fieschi – Demos (Chair)

This discussion will examine the nature and degree of economic participation of minority populations in both countries. It will question the role of the state in the management of economic integration; the relationship between political and economic integration; and compare and contrast the role of welfare provision in creating social mobility.

The seminars are invitation only. If you would like to join us, please email seminars@demos.co.uk, or call 0207 367 6338.
