Women and culture

Demos Associate, and former Demos researcher, Helen McCarthy has been looking into the place of women in cultural organisations in a joint project between Demos and City University.
Her report can be found here and shows that we need a much more nuanced and subtle approach to the subject. According to a survey undertaken as part of the research, women account for 64% of the cultural sector workforce, and achieve near parity at Chief Executive Director level. However, there is under representation of women on Boards, and particularly as Board Chairs. On the other hand, women Chief Executives tend to employ women and men account for only a third of the workforce. So there are gender issues in both directions...
