Colonizing space - the solution to overcrowding

1:45pm Wednesday, 25th June 2003

Next time you're crushed in the tube or navigating the tides of tourists around Westminster, remember: there is a long-term solution to the problems of overcrowding. Melissa and I met yesterday with Brian Chase, Executive Director of the National Space Society, a small but influential lobby group in Washington. In the short term, their goal is to promote human space flight and get the Shuttle programme restarted. But longer term, they are more ambitious. As their founding statement of philosophy says: "Our ultimate goal is to have people living and working in thriving communities beyond the Earth."

Why should we jump "beyond the Earth" at the moment? It seems rather wasteful when we have over three times the Earth's land mass worth of beautiful, unclaimed tropical mid-ocean, enough to very comfortable settle tens of billions of people. We could colonize that. It would certainly be cheaper and easier to build floating islands than giant space colonies on the moon. Or, for that matter, we could "colonize" Antarctica and other desert regions. This too would be cheaper, and easier, then building space colonies, as feastful for the imagination as it is.

Colonizing space is the right thing to do not becuase of overcrowingness but because it is the next step for us human to take. we need to colonize space if we are to survive. For example: what if an asteriod hit the earth today we all would be dead in a year or two. If we have others out there we will know that humans are still alive. We need to go out there to answer there questions: why are we here? Is anyone else out there? Where are we going? etc. and colonzing is also important because if we are the only living world we should carry the torch and spread life in this vast and empty Universe.
