Auto-identity

Earlier in the day, we were met by a different kind of organisation in a different kind of car. Andrew Blau of the Global Business Network cruised up to meet us in a vintage BMW coupe, and took us for a very enjoyable lunch with three of his GBN colleagues. We swapped notes on scenarios, chewed over consultancy and agreed we should definitely collaborate in future. GBN have a lot to teach us about how to create a thriving, international network of associates, and how to combine strategy and consultancy with innovative thinking. More at www.gbn.com

I'm not sure if the Long Now Foundation would drive a car. If they did, it would be very slow indeed - maybe 0-60 over a couple of decades. In any case, we arrived at our meeting with Alexander Rose, Long Now supremo, by taxi. They are based in the most fantastic location, right by the San Francisco bay, overlooking the Golden Gate bridge. Alexander gave us an update on their various projects, and we agreed in principle to co-host some kind of "longview policy" event in London in mid-2004. More on Long Now here.

It's been a great trip: lots of provocative thinking, useful contacts and new leads to follow up. And loads of Wifi - you can literally log in anywhere (I'm currently in a coffee shop). We're about to head off to the airport now, so see you all back at base around lunchtime on Thursday....

Are we officially 'pro-car' at Demos? I imagine that we probably ought to support public transport wherever possible, but I suspect that under current conditions we might find this pretty hard to sustain. Speaking for myself, having rented The Two Towers on DVD last weekend I'm drawn towards a flying serpent Black Rider style as my personal choice of transportation from Pimlico to Elizabeth House of a morning - but a cuddly, Barneyesque version of course. With a coffee bar.
