In the bag

This is a smart idea of from Tesco - people will be able to earn loyalty points for every old plastic bag they bring back and use in their stores. It looks like one of those win-win ideas: it works for the environment, adds to Tesco's green credentials, and encourages people to return to shop there.

Good idea yes, but I think to really stop people using plastic you have to start charging for it - in Ireland plastic bags cost 15c a go, the result of a policy introduced in 2002 which saw plastic bag use drop by 90% within 5 months. The revenue generated ifrom the 'plastax' is (apparently) used for environmental projects, which makes it win-win all round. Unfortunately, we can't rely on goodwill and one-off gestures by certain organisations to get rid of plastic, it takes more to change old habits, and in this case I think the government has a bigger role to play than tesco, or any other well-meaning business.
