Demos is hosting a discussion about Philippe LeGrain’s new book Immigrants: your country needs them.
Immigration divides our globalising world like no other issue. We are being swamped by bogus asylum-seekers and infiltrated by terrorists, our jobs stolen, our benefit system abused, our way of life destroyed – or so we are told...
As Africans struggle onto Spanish tourist beaches, Chinese cockle-pickers drown in Morecambe Bay and the death-toll in the past decade on the US-Mexican border rises above 9/11's, Philippe Legrain asks why ever-rising numbers of people from poor countries are arriving in Europe, North America and Australasia? Can we keep them out? Should we even be trying?
An expert panel, including Nick Johnson (Director of Policy and Public Sector, Commission for Racial Equality), Ben Page (Chairman of Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute), Kenan Malik (Senior Visiting Fellow at University of Surrey) and Baroness Lola Young will assess LeGrain's argument and ask what the real terms of this debate should be. The discussion will be a chance to move away from the polarised, open door/shut door debate that dominates this topic, towards a more nuanced consideration of the economic, cultural and human issues at stake.
We hope you can join us for an engaging eveniing. After the panel there'll be a chance to continue the discussion informally over drinks.
