Race, Security and Criminal Justice

09 Jul

A Forward Thinking seminar

Date and time:
Monday, 9th July 2007 at 12:00pm
Location:
Commission for Racial Equality, 201-211 Borough High Street, London
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED, FROM 3RD JULY TO 9TH JULY. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY RSVP-ED, PLEASE DO SO AGAIN BY EMAILING THE ADDRESS AT THE BOTTOM. WE APOLOGISE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

In the second of our joint Forward Thinking seminars with the Commission for Racial Equality, Nick Clegg MP and Professor Ben Bowling will discuss race, security and criminal justice.

The importance of community safety and a fair and effective criminal justice system to the creation of strong and cohesive communities is well documented. For BME communities, the problems are two-fold; not only are they disproportionately the victims of crime, but they also tend to suffer more at the hands of the legal system through measures such as stop and search, sentencing and ASBOs.

Nick Clegg MP, Liberal  Democrats Home Affairs Spokesperson, and Ben Bowling, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at King's College London, will discuss ways in which this deadlock can be broken, looking at both systemic reform, as well as the role for communities themselves.

We hope to see you for what will be an excellent debate. If you would like to attend, please email forwardthinking@cre.gov.uk.
