THE Metropolitan Police were caught up in a race row on two fronts in the past week when the its highest ranking Muslim officer revealed his intent to sue the Met for racial discrimination and victimisation.

In a separate incident the National Association of Muslim Police (NAMP) called upon Jacqui Smith to order a critical review of racism in the police.

Tarique Ghaffur, the Met's number three in command and Britain's most senior Muslim police officer, said that he will be suing the Metropolitan Police in relation to his treatment in deciding on his role for the Olympics preparations. Mr Ghaffur claims that he was sidelined during the process.

Ghaffur has the support of the National Black Police Association (NBPA) whose president and legal advisor, Ali Darzaei, revealed that Ghaffur had 'just had enough' of his treatment by the Met.

A statement by the NBPA said: "AC Ghaffur appears to have been treated extremely poorly. We are totally convinced of the legitimacy of this claim and will be fully supporting AC Ghaffur with regard to this matter, together with the 43 local BPAs around the country."

Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, moved to try and re-assert his authority when the rumours first broke of Ghaffur's intention to sue but his heavy handed approach seemed not to have had the desired affect.

Sir Ian Blair, who would have had the final say on Ghaffur's role in the preparations for the Olympics, moved to defend his record on race, he said: "I believe I have a long, honourable and occasionally bloodstained record of the championing of diversity, not perfect but always principled and persistent."

Meanwhile,  NAMP have pointed to the results of an audit which detailed how Muslim officers were often overlooked for specialist operations including counter-terrorism. They also questioned why almost half of the 43 forces across UK didn't responded to the audit questionnaire as conducted by NAMP and think tank Demos.

Both NAMP and NBPA believe that the government needs to intervene in the row which is now a political issue.
