- Music, Makes The People, Come Together... "No matter what happens in the future, rock and roll will save the world," said The Who guitarist Pete Townsend. And he was right. This morning I switched on the radio to hear Pete Doherty, of popular beat combo Babyshambles, name-check both my birthplace and my current home in the same line of his current pop-ditty Albion. It was life-affirming stuff. But as an individual, Mr Doherty quite obviously isn?t. So there you have it; pop stars won?t save the world ? music might. Tapping into the... continue reading on 9th December 2005
- Pubs Make People As alcohol-induced bodily fluid cascades down the high-streets of Britain tonight, you could be forgiven for forgetting some of the better aspects of the pubs of England. Sadly the Demos publication People Make Places, didn't feature a pub in its hunt for shared public spaces, but maybe in hindsight it should have. We had our suspicions that they might be the crucible of democracy and then somebody sent this through.OpinionFormer creates a good space for your and your opinions to develop. We... continue reading on 25th November 2005

- In from the cold Well, 1. It?s their first proper release and they?re teenagers 2. They?ve received very little marketing or promotion; most interest having emerging from myspace in the last few months. 3. They?re signed to the independent record label Domino. 4. They generated most interest by staying in Sheffield, (rather than coming to the capital to ?make it?).James Purnell, The Minister for the Creative Industries (or the ?Music Minister? as he now seems to be called), announced some interest in this... continue reading on 24th October 2005
- I - Toons The resurgence of cities in the last ten years, the falling price of technology and the twin forces of the internet and digitisation of music are doing crazy things to the music world. Take The Arctic Monkeys for example. This article in The Guardian explains how, with only one limited edition 7? under their belt, they recently rocked up in London to play in-front of 2,000 people at the Astoria. Earlier this year we wrote a report for the NewcastleGateshead Initiative looking at some of the... continue reading on 17th October 2005
- Glasgow Dreams 1. Glasgow 2020 is the child of Scotland 2020. Scotland 2020 argued that Scotland is gripped by a sense of fatalistic pessimism where the future has become something that happens to people rather than something they can play an active role in shaping. It argued that this permeated everything from family life to the highest levels of political decision making in the country. It suggested that this had become a bulwark to Scotland?s future development. In order to combat this, Scotland 2020... continue reading on 10th October 2005
- Ex-Demos Employee Turns Into Film-Making Oddball What do people do after they've worked in a think tank? Some go and work for NGO's, others drift into the civil service or another PhD. Just thought it was worth flagging up former Demosser, Bobby Webster, who left think tankery to go and make films in America. You can view his website and watch his films here. Also, if anyone is living in Glasgow and fancies a day working on a boat on Tuesday, the next thing you need to do is click here continue reading on 7th October 2005
- Parties make People 1. Spaces that support sharing and exchange in cities are really important. 2. But most of our so called "public spaces" in cities aren't so hot at supporting sharing3. Nonetheless, there are lots of shared spaces in cities. We can find these if we follow people people to the places they go rather than waiting for them to role up and start mixing it in town squares etc.4. We have to learn the lessons that make sharing in these spaces work(be they Car Boot Sales, Supermarket Cafes or... continue reading on 15th September 2005
