I've just had a read of David Miliband's speech this week on 'The Politics of Community', and it touches on a lot of the things we've been talking about at Demos over the last year or so. This passage...

The key is for all citizens to feel they have the power to make a difference to their local institutions in a direct way should they choose to exercise it, as well as through the ballot box every 4 years

...picks up the point made in Everyday Democracy about the need for renewal of our Democracy at every level through reconnecting people with the institutions that shape our daily lives as well as those that legislate in Westminster.And...

Research by another American, Robert Sampson, has pointed out that while shared activities can build trust within communities, this is not always enough to tackle problems such as anti-social behaviour. What is needed is for people to feel that their actions will be backed up by others in the neighbourhood - that there is a shared willingness to act, and shared expectations about the circumstances in which citizens will act

...reminds me very much of the analysis in Start With People, that communities need to be imbued with hope if people are to play a greater role in collective problem solving...

...and of course the argument that Robert Sampson made himself in Network Logic.

Exciting stuff.
