Hannah Lownsbrough became a Demos associate in the summer of 2007. Her expertise is in the field of community organisations, community-led approaches to regeneration and race issues.
Hannah Lownsbrough left Demos in the summer of 2007. During her time at Demos she worked on a range of different projects: on minority ethnic community organisations, community-led approaches to counter-terrorism, and on the potential of a systems thinking methodology for renewing local government policies aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour amongst young people.
Hannah is chair of trustees at Chelsea Youth Club and Flashpoint Play Centre, a community organisation based on an estate in central London. She is also a trustee of Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. She has a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
Most homeless people lack the everyday life skills such as dealing with bureaucracy, networking and negotiating that we all take for granted. This report argues that we need a new approach to developing life skills as a way to tackle social exclusion. Attempts to help people develop life skills should start from the actual experiences of their lives, rather than attempting to teach life skills in a formal setting.
The Leadership Imperative explores the role of leadership in the emerging reforms of local children's services. It suggests that for the integration of services to work, leaders must focus upon changing the prevailing cultures of organisations, rather than altering the structure of services and hoping that working practices will naturally follow.
Change Within examines the crucial role played by black and minority ethnic voluntary organisations.
Based on over twelve months of embedded research, Bringing it Home: Community based approaches to counter-terrorism argues that, despite some commendable attempts at engagement, the Government’s actions continue to drive a wedge between the majority of British Muslims and the rest of society, rather than isolating the violent few.
This report aims to address the deficit in the current arena by offering one analysis of how public spaces can contribute to building positive relationships and bridges between different communities.
