We're proud of what we already do; buying environmentally responsible office supplies, recycling as much as our council will allow, printing our publications on recycled paper, donating and recycling old office equipment...
However, we realise that that there is more that could and should be done. As we attempt to navigate Demos to a greener position, with the ultimate aim of becoming a zero carbon/zero waste workplace, we want to learn from other people's experiences and also share our own.
For instance, as our international remit (and thus travel) increases, so too does our carbon footprint. We're currently in the process of calculating the tonnage of CO2 our travels in 2006 will produce, and then want to look into ways to offset this. Expect us to blog about our findings and decisions.
We also want to address the waste our office produces. As yet we don't recycle our cardboard or our organic waste, and we would imagine that doing this is something that other organisations also find problematic. We are currently exploring the potential for a private firm to take on our recycling, and whether it would be at all possible to compost our kitchen waste. Again, we want to use this part of the website to publicise what we're doing and thinking about - and also to hear from any interested parties.
Should you wish to contact us direct about any of the issues raised here, please e-mail our Operations Manager Alison Harvie.
Bokshai bins would seem to be the answer to indoor, non-smelly composting. We're hoping to buy one of these and trial it in the office.
the opportunity is there - now see whether it will stand up in the delivery process
