After a controversial decade, the future of the monarchy has become the subject of considerable debate. The authors argue that the monarchy must be modernised and restructured to concentrate exclusively on its symbolic functions, while down-grading its religious and political roles and outline a programme for change that would allow the monarchy to find a mission appropriate to its place in a modern democracy.
