Alright my hubber?
Last week I went along to the official opening of the Hub in Bristol. You may know the Islington original, home to lots of social entrepreneurs and achingly creative types. Demos talks a lot about user-led design. The Bristol Hub feels a bit like user-led design as an extreme sport. Spread across three floors the hub is growing, molding and adapting round around people as they move in and start working there. You need a table? OK, Simon the on-site designer/carpenter will design and...

And they aren't even trying
Last week we went to Amsterdam to talk to all the people who have set up urban beaches in the city, and just next door to Strand West beach we found this temporary student accommodation. The area it is in is a not-quite-post industrial landscape set for major redevelopment, but they aren’t quite sure what they are going to do with it yet. So in the meantime, they are using the space to help address the student housing shortage in city. But just look at the quality. The desultory...

City of strategy, cities of tactics
This year’s Architecture Biennale is an interesting one. Go to the main exhibition, and what you will see is not architecture. Instead of fetishizing architectural drawings and models, curator Ricky Burdett has decided that it is the city we need to be concerned with.
So, great - Yes, but.

No bank holiday north of the border, but there was a Big Dream.
It's The Big Dream tomorrow, which is the last public event in the Glasgow 2020 project. We have taken over a series of rooms in The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, in the name of exciting public interest in thinking about and deliberating the future of Glasgow. There are a load of old photos here, and explanations of a few of the things that we're doing in each of the spaces. If Glasgow 2020 has a core phillosophy a the moment, it's that city's are the stories they tell about...

DCLG / Gosplan Comparison Shock
The re-emergence of Russian centralised planning caught my attention over the weekend. It doesn't, according to Deputy PM Vladimir Yakovlev, amount to a return to amusingly scientific output specifications for nails and screwdrivers, but rather a means to integrate cross-regional planning needs. Or, as Alexander Khloponin, Govenor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, suggested - 'We must adjust aims and tasks, and not supplies of nails and products...'

Workshop and Narrative
We've been developing our Future Planners story for a while now - a process that really began with the writing of the 'Production Values' chapter. And the most recent session was last week's workshop here at Demos (pictures in the Flickr feed on the right). Thanks to everyone that came and withstood the intense heat and brought real skill, experience and insight to a compelling day's work. With that workshop and through our initial thoughts from the interviews and case-studies, we have produced...
